Silhouette
The latest version of the Silhoutte is now in
production and ready to audition at our Chicago area store!
Here are some details on this, our statement loudspeaker:
Each speaker uses two custom designed 6.5” Kevlar
woofers with dual voice coils, as required for the Ambient recovery
feature.
The tweeter is a Scanspeak Revelator, modified with
Sorbathane to lower the usable low frequency to perfectly match with the
woofers at the crossover point.
The crossover is a series design,
with only four high quality components in signal path. 2- 12 gauge foil
coils, Clarity PUR capacitors, Mundorf’s Ultra resistor. The input terminals are WBT Next
Generation. Only the best
parts!
We are particularly proud of the special cabinet design.
The top woofer is loaded into a small completely sealed compartment for
tight midbass and midrange. The lower woofer is in much larger chamber;
effectively a quasi- transmission line; the back wave coming from the
woofer goes into a large loading chamber then goes through a 24”
compression chamber that exits at the bottom back. The result is a quality
of the lower frequency content that must be heard to be believed.
During assembly of the
crossover, all contact points are first crimped, then soldered with WBT
lead-free silver. All wiring is point-to-point (no circuit boards). All
crossover elements are rubber mounted to isolate them from the cabinet for
improved dynamics and clarity. This attention to detail shows throughout the
Silhoutte, from the cabinetry to the specially designed drivers, to the
terminals. Like all of our speakers, the Silhoutte employs ambient recovery
technology, explained in more detail in a paper we have available
here.

So how does it sound?
Well...we know that you have heard the term
"breakthrough" enough times to be somewhat cynical, but this circuitry really
works. The combination of the ambient recovery circuitry, custom designed
drivers, painstaking attention to detail, and hours of listening tests have
produced an outstanding result. This is a speaker that is wonderfully
detailed, yet non-fatiguing, and produces a wide soundstage and a much larger
than usual sweet spot. At 88db, low level listening is a revelation But put them in a bigger room, turn it up, and they kick
ass when the source material calls for it!
